Amber Fragrance Resin

wp-1483388546030.jpg  Amber Resin. Warm, vanilla, sometimes citrusy high notes, always sweet.  This substance is not resin in the strict sense of the word.  It is not solely derived from trees or shrubs.  It is not only plant matter.  Good amber resin is made of butters such as Cocoa Butter or another type of butter, resins, perfumes, vanilla and other scents.

This wonderful scent can be used to scent the body, scent the home or scent products.  it can be burnt on prepared charcoal.  We have a small locket to hold a piece of amber around the neck!  We have been told by some customers that our dark amber calms spirits.  Another customer uses her amber to make perfume-real perfumers perfume.

Violet and Company has both light and dark amber for sale.  The light amber has a decidedly citrus overtone.  The dark amber lacks this citrus high notes.  We sell amber on our website (www.violetandcompany.com) and on Etsy (VioletAndCompany).

This month we created a video showing what we do with little pieces of amber that are left over.  Check it out here  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shQI-4X4RaM

Leave us a message to let us know about your experience with Amber fragrance resin.

Which Scents are Calming

image

Like the Lemongrass Essential Oil from Auroshikha, there are several scents that have a calming effect on people.  Calm and agitation all begin in the brain with a release of chemicals in response to a thought or situation. It goes to reason that there are things that trigger a calming response and one of those is scent. Scent is a powerful initiator of memory and emotion. Scents can be delivered using different vehicles such as via incense, via essential oil in a burner, via essential oil put on the body or through simmering whole herb in water *steam method*.  Each delivery method has different results depending on the system used and the person using it.

Some scents used to initiate a calming response in the body are Lavender, Chamomile, Lemongrass, Sandalwood (promotes calm by encouraging a singular focus, thus quieting an excited mind) or really whatever else calms you.  Perhaps a certain scent evokes memory of happy times and places.  Just that happy memory will release the “happy chemicals” in the brain and calm agitation.

The vehicle you choose to deliver the scent can also play a part in the calming process.  Sometimes watching a single, wispy, strand of incense smoke curl up into the air is enough to calm the mind and body.  Some people don’t like smoke and prefer a water bath essential oil burner.  Sometimes, if you are going to be out and about, enveloping yourself in a protective atmosphere of scent can provide that portable calming scent that is needed to get through stressful situations.  Sometimes it is nice just to put a tiny bit of essential oil in with your face cream and apply it to the face or apply some to your hair so only you can smell it.

It is amazing what scent can do for you in your daily life.  It can reduce stress and initiate calm when you need it.  It can also be used in many different forms and ways.  Let your own inner voice guide you as to what and how to use scent in your life.  Life is what you make it; you have choices so why not make it great?  As always be safe with using essential oils and only use oils and incense as directed.

Please leave a comment and let us know what scent you use to encourage that calming response in you!

Lemongrass Essential Oil to the Rescue!

LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL TO THE RESCUE!

Genus Species : Cymbopogon flexuosus

The genus species is important because there are many, many types of Lemongrass but this one is used on the body and in the body.  So when you buy lemongrass oil shop by name (lemongrass) and genus species.

Lemongrass is a good antioxidant.  It has also been used to help with muscle, joint and tendon pain.  It is a relaxant and relaxes nerves and muscles so can help with some types of pain.  Like lavender essential oil does.  Here at Violet and Company we use it diluted 20:80 (20 drops essential oil to 80 drops vegetable oil like a sweet almond or grapeseed oil- but you can also use olive oil in a pinch).  Then we rub it on the affected muscle or area.

There are many other documented uses for Lemongrass essential oil such as a mental pick me up.  Some use lemongrass to brighten the mood.

Of course you can also drink lemongrass tea.  It is a calming and uplifting tea that is good iced in summer months.  The tea is made using the dried plant.

Oh, by the way, don’t use this oil on a cat or dog without talking to a vet first.  Cats especially don’t do well with citrus essential oils.

You can buy the essential oil here

In the interest of rebirth and Spring, let’s talk about smudging…

Grey and White Sage large Bundle

The Smudging Ceremony: Remove Bad Energy with Sage Smoke
How to perform a cleansing ceremony with the use of burning sage, also known as ‘smudging’.

A smudge stick is a dried and bundled plant. One can also use loose leaves in smudging, but before we get to the particulars of such a ceremony it will help to have an understanding of the origins of this Sacred practice and how it will cleanse, heal, and consecrate an energy field, or thing, or space.

The Origins and History of Smudging

People commonly credit smudging as being a Native American practice, but the use of rising smoke in Spiritual Rituals has been practiced across many cultures for thousands of years. The Ancient Hindu texts reveal this was practiced 6,000 years ago with the burning of incense. Smoke purification was performed in Egypt, with the burning of aromatic resins for religious ceremonies. It was practiced in Babylonia, Greece, Rome, Japan, Tibet, China, among the ancient Hebrews, and among indigenous tribal cultures around the world, with the Native Tribes of North America being only a portion. Catholic and Orthodox Christianity, which are an amalgam of pagan beliefs and practices, use incense in religious Ceremonies, adapted from the pagan rituals popular when the Christian theocracy was legalized by the pagan-turned-Christian, Roman Emperor Constantine, in 325 AD.

So the use of smoke to purify in a spiritual way is not exclusive to the Native American tradition, although we have them to thank for the wonderful and deeply spiritual practice of burning sage and other sacred plants as a purification practice. This tradition is a very beautiful gift and the most effective method commonly used in spiritual cleansing ceremonies today.

How it Works to Cleanse and Purify:

Smudging is an intrinsic part of shamanism, the world’s oldest medicine. Shamans recognize that every form of life on this planet has a spiritual purpose and a sacred consciousness. They know that plants have invaluable healing properties. Human animals, as it turns out, are not the top rung of creation’s ladder even though we think we are because we have big brains and walk on two feet. All beings, whether plant, animal, or mineral are divine and have sacred right to life; all have something to offer to the manifest “other.”

To approach a smudging ritual and to be effective in cleansing away negative energy, one must be reverent of the plant being used and even the energies being cleansed. All energy is divine at its core, whether Light or Dark. Respect for all life is essential to any smudging that you undertake. If you cannot feel reverent about this sacred practice, don’t do it. Find someone who is spiritually qualified and energetically prepared to do it for you.

Although many different plants can be used for smudging, indigenous American tribes consider four plants to be especially sacred: sage, sweetgrass, tobacco, and cedar. Each plant is considered to have a special function and this can vary by tribe and tradition. While sage is used for purification, sweetgrass is used to bring in positive energies, and its smoke is considered to carry prayers to the Creator.

When to Use Smudge

-If you are feeling down, negative, stuck, or in a spiritual low place, smudging is an excellent way to change things for the better.

-When your house, your property, or any place or space has been exposed to heavy and negative energies, or painful experiences and even illness, they should be cleansed with smudge.

-When you move into a new location, it should be smudged to cleanse the psychic imprints of previous occupants.

-If you feel the presence of bad energy in your living quarters, or if a solitary room makes you feel bad or uneasy by being in there, it’s time to smudge.

-If you want to create a protective barrier against outside negative influences, such as neighborhood issues, it’s time to smudge.

-If you want to make your prayers stronger and if you want to feel more connected to Spirit, it’s time to smudge.

-If your vehicle has been in a fender-bender or you’ve had a close call in your car, smudge it, inside and out, to remove negative energetic imprints that can attract more negative experiences.

-Cleanse second-hand items with smudge to remove psychic imprints of previous owners.

-You can consecrate and energetically charge your garden by smudging.

-You should smudge to clean yourself and your space before engaging in any psychic contact or spiritual ceremony.

-Hang a sweetgrass rope over the inside of your front door to cleanse all people and beings coming into your home.

-Walk around the outside perimeter of your property with a smoldering smudge to cleanse the boundaries of your living space
